Posted on: Wednesday, 23 May 2007, 15:00 CDT

GNNTDC:

WHAT:

On May 25, 2007, Africa Day will be celebrated around the world. Dr. Peter Hotez, global leader in tropical medicine and parisitology, will issue a call to action for treatment and elimination of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) for all Africans. Devastating and disfiguring, NTDs are "diseases of poverty" that afflict more than 1 billion people across the world, including 500 million Africans.

WHO:

Dr. Peter J. Hotez, President and CEO of the Sabin Vaccine Institute, Director of the Human Hookworm Vaccine Initiative and the Global Network for Neglected Tropical Disease Control and Walter G. Ross Professor and Chair of The George Washington University Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Tropical Medicine

WHEN:

May 25, 2007

WHERE:

Washington, D.C. - phone interviews also available

About NTDs:

NTDs are poverty-perpetuating, disabling and disfiguring parasitic and bacterial infections that afflict one billion people. NTDs contribute to an ongoing cycle of poverty, stigmatization, disability, disfigurement and death, leaving millions unable to work or participate in family or community life. Despite their pervasiveness, NTDs are often overshadowed in terms of visibility and resource commitment by the "big three" -- HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria.
