Fifth Annual Good Neighbor Pharmacy/Institute for Community Pharmacy Scholarship Golf Classic to Tee Off on June 13

Posted on: Thursday, 31 May 2007, 12:00 CDT

VALLEY FORGE, Pa., May 31 /PRNewswire/ -- The fifth annual Good Neighbor Pharmacy (GNP)/ Institute for Community Pharmacy (ICP) Scholarship Golf Classic is set to tee off on Wednesday, June 13, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. at Robinson Ranch Golf Club in Santa Clarita, Calif. As the largest event of its kind, the golf classic has raised $600,000 for pharmacy scholarships and continuing education opportunities since 2003 and has brought together more than 200 golfers every year. The money raised benefits students at the University of Southern California's School of Pharmacy and the Western University of Health Sciences College of Pharmacy as well as underwrites the costs for Continuing Education Programs and special projects.

"Good Neighbor Pharmacy established the golf tournament five years ago to financially assist students and encourage their entrepreneurial spirit, so they could open their own pharmacies," said Mike Quick, honorary co- chairperson for the event and AmerisourceBergen's vice president of Retail Sales. "Our goal is to raise another $225,000 this year."

GNP's long-standing commitment to independent pharmacies has paid off, to the benefit of not only up-and-coming pharmacists but also for their communities. Since 2003, 15 of the young pharmacists associated with programs have either opened their own pharmacies or are in the process of doing so. That number is expected to increase as more scholarship winners graduate. According to Quick, interest in opening a pharmacy has continued to grow among students.

"The University of Southern California's School of Pharmacy began offering a class on entrepreneurship in 2003," Quick says. "There were six kids in the class then. But, the following year, there were 40 kids in the class, and now it is one of the toughest courses to get into. Of all the things I do, helping pharmacy students realize their dreams is the one I get the most pleasure out of. It is great to see their passion and enthusiasm for buying a pharmacy."

An awards dinner and live auction will be held immediately following the tournament. There will also be a VIP cocktail reception at the Hyatt Valencia.

Robinson Ranch Golf Club is located at 27734 Sand Canyon Road, Santa Clarita, CA 91355.
