Study Published in the Journal of the American Medical Association Shows Major Health Benefits With Obesity Surgery

INAMED Corporation (Nasdaq:IMDC):

-- Meta-analysis Shows Link Between Weight Loss Surgery and Significant Resolution of Obesity-Related Diseases Examined

-- Major Obesity Diseases Reviewed Show Improvement

-- 77% of Diabetes Patients Had Complete Resolution of Disease

INAMED Corporation, (Nasdaq:IMDC) manufacturer of the LAP-BAND(R) System, the only FDA-approved gastric banding option, learned today that the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) has published a systematic review and meta-analysis of 136 studies with a total of 22,094 morbidly obese patients on the impact of bariatric surgery (including gastric banding) on weight loss, operative mortality and four major obesity comorbidities.

The study found that the typical bariatric patients lost more than 60% of their excess weight; associated comorbid conditions, such as diabetes, were resolved in 77% of the patients who had that disease. In addition, patients with high blood pressure (62%), hyperlipidemia (70% -- high cholesterol and high triglycerides) and sleep apnea (83% -- sleep obstructed breathing) experienced complete resolution or improvement of their conditions.

"This review and analysis in JAMA builds on the growing body of evidence that bariatric surgery saves lives, resolves diseases and, by extension, saves health care dollars," says Nick Teti, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of INAMED. "Bariatric surgery works; it is time to care for patients, save lives and provide adequate reimbursement to ensure that these surgical options are available to every morbidly obese patient."

The October 13, 2004 JAMA article noted the dramatic increase in obesity in the past decade and that the morbidly obese do not respond well to diet and drug therapy, but do respond well to bariatric surgery. Its overall conclusion was that effective weight loss and improvement in comorbid disease was achieved in a substantial majority of morbidly obese patients after bariatric surgery.
