Infant Rescued From Garbage Bag
Attempted murder charges have been filed against a Chicago woman who gave birth to a baby boy at her home and then put him in a trash bag.
Firefighters and paramedics began searching for the infant after workers at Mt. Sinai Hospital noticed a cut umbilical cord when they examined Alsina Shelton, 23, The Chicago Tribune reported Friday.
Shelton was rushed to the hospital by ambulance Wednesday night after her mother came home and found her bleeding.
Rescue workers searched Shelton’s home for nearly 20 minutes before they found the infant in a black trash bag hidden under a pile of clothing in a bedroom closet.
The hours-old infant was still alive but had begun to turn blue from lack of oxygen.
Firefighter Christopher Tolbert says the umbilical cord was still attached when he made a small tear in the bag and pulled the baby out.
The child is reported in good condition at Children’s Memorial hospital.
Shelton faces one count each of attempted murder and reckless conduct.
