State Mental Health Commissioner Will Be Commencement Speaker at Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology on Sunday, June 3, 2007

BOSTON, June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Dr. Elizabeth Childs, commissioner of the Department of Mental Health (DMH) since June 2003, will give the keynote address at the commencement ceremonies for Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology on Sunday, June 3, at 1 pm. She will also receive an honorary doctorate.

Also receiving an honorary doctorate that day will be Dr. Herbert Benson, the Director Emeritus of the Benson-Henry Institute (BHI), and Mind/Body Medical Institute and an Associate Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School. Dr. Benson is a pioneer in mind/body medicine, one of the first Western physicians to bring spirituality and healing into medicine.
Says Dr. Nicholas Covino, president of MSPP: " As our graduates leave our school, there is time for one more lesson. The professional lives of these two honorees demonstrate values that we hope our graduates will emulate and imitate.
"Dr. Childs is an accomplished psychiatrist who has served the mental health community with vision, compassion, commitment, and courage. A multi- talented professional who may have used her training for many purposes, but she has immersed herself in the care of people and health care systems of great need.
"Dr. Benson is a cardiologist whose research and clinical work has transformed the practice of medicine. One of the international pioneers in Mind/Body medicine he has authored 175 publications and 11 books. Moreover, he has generously and selflessly mentored generations of physicians, psychologists, nurses and other health care workers. He is world renowned, but remains humble and accessible.

In addition to a doctorate in clinical psychology (PsyD), MSPP offers a master of science degree in psychopharmacology, a master of arts in school psychology and a master of arts in counseling psychology. The school also provides advanced training in areas that span the evolving field, including geropsychology, business psychology, executive coaching, and juvenile forensics.
The school also offers immersion training in Latino culture and language to prepare self-selected doctoral candidates to care for the special mental health needs of a growing Latino community.
This year, MSPP will grant 40 doctorates and 14 master of science in psychopharmacology degrees.
Dr. Covino believes that the new MSPP graduates have been well prepared for a world in which the need for psychotherapeutic treatments and mental health medicines is growing.
"Twenty percent of children in this state have diagnosable mental illness and more suffer from relationship and adjustment problems, yet less than one- third of these are able to receive adequate mental health care," says Dr. Covino, adding that "where 75 percent of medicines for mental health care are prescribed by primary care personnel with limited training in this area, these graduates are in a position to offer expert consultation regarding mental health medicines and sophisticated psychological care to children, adults and families."
Founded in 1974, MSPP's innovative program of rigorous academic instruction and intensive, supervised, field training has brought professionals to the community who are leaders in the field of psychology as well as compassionate healers. MSPP continues to build on the innovative legacy of the past, while creating new programs, methods and models for training young professionals to "Meet the need and Make a Difference" in the community.
