Law Would Mine Medicare Data for Research

A U.S. coalition of business, labor and senior groups backed legislation Tuesday the groups say will improve healthcare performance through research.
The Divided We Fail group, made up of the AARP, Business Roundtable and the Service Employees' International Union, endorsed a bill that would create private organizations to mine Medicare beneficiary data.
Under the proposal, sponsored by Sens. Judd Gregg, R-N.H., and Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., special private entities called Medicare Quality Reporting Organizations would study Medicare information for ways to improve healthcare quality and efficiency.
Information is the best tool we have to improve our healthcare system, said AARP CEO Bill Novelli. The Medicare information this bill would provide can play a powerful role in unlocking an efficient healthcare system that works for patients, instead of against them.
The bill will be reported to the Senate Finance Committee, the group said.
The newly created research organizations would be closely monitored to prevent abuse of confidential data.
