Dr. Robert Rey Says, 'Wear Your Sunscreen' to Prevent Skin From Aging Too Quickly

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., June 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Exposure to the sun in any dose actually does the skin more harm than good, according to Dr. Robert Rey, plastic surgeon, medical expert for the new Web site BoomerTowne.com and star of the E! hit reality show "Dr. 90210." There is no such thing as a healthy base tan. In fact, the skin's change in color, or tanning, is the body's response to an injury.
"Many people don't realize that taking care of their skin when entering the sun can prevent some effects of aging and numerous health issues later in life," says Dr. Rey. "Many of my patients would not have needed a face-lift if they took better care of their skin in the sun."
Good skincare should begin at an early age. A study by the American Academy of Dermatology estimates that if children regularly used a sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher during their first 18 years of life, they would cut their lifetime risk of melanoma by 78 percent.
Dr. Rey offers these tips for anyone who spends time in the sun. -- Wear sunscreen every time you step out in the sun. Apply sunscreen at least 15 minutes before going outside and reapply about every 2 hours. Today, many facial moisturizers already have sunscreen in them. -- Seek shade during hours when the sun's rays are brightest, generally around noon. -- Protect your eyes with sunglasses or a hat. In addition to the sun not being good for your eyes, it is also not good for the sensitive skin around your eyes. Wearing sunglasses or a hat, in addition to sunscreen, will provide an extra layer of protection. -- Drink plenty of water to keep your body hydrated. Hydration also helps strengthen your skin to withstand the sun's rays. -- Avoid tanning booths. Artificial UV rays are just as harmful as natural light from the sun.
