CAHI Supports President Bush's Health Plan; Bush's Plan Vital to Curing Ills of America's Health Care System

Posted on: Thursday, 21 October 2004, 12:00 CDT

ALEXANDRIA, Va., Oct. 21 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Today the Council for Affordable Health Insurance (CAHI) announced its support for the health care plan and reforms proposed by President Bush.

"President Bush's plan goes against the trend of more federal government involvement in health care," stated CAHI Director Dr. Merrill Matthews. "The Health Savings Account (HSA), which is now law, enables Americans to reduce their dependency on third-party payers and allows them to deal directly with their doctor. His tax credit for health insurance provides help to those who need it most. And he has called for allowing people in one state to buy health insurance policies that are approved and available to those in other states -- vastly increasing consumers' health insurance options."

President Bush's plan has been estimated to cost $90 to $129 billion over 10 years, will cover 6.7 million uninsured Americans and will energize the private health care system. This will cause more people to have access to affordable health insurance, further reducing the number of uninsured. Sen. Kerry's plan, estimated to cost $650 billion to $1.5 trillion over 10 years, claims to expand private employer coverage, but would open the door to heavy government involvement. Kerry also supports eliminating HSAs, imposing price controls on prescription drugs, reimporting drugs from other countries and expanding Medicare -- making it even more expensive.

Matthews concluded, "President Bush's plan costs less than Sen. Kerry's and increases choices for consumers and personal freedom for patients. CAHI supports the president's plan as the most reasonable and cost-effective way to make health insurance affordable for all Americans."

Founded in 1992, CAHI is a non-profit research and advocacy association whose mission is to develop and promote free market solutions to America's health care challenges. CAHI's membership includes health insurance companies (active in the individual, small group, HSA and senior markets), small businesses, physicians, actuaries and insurance brokers.
