Archbishop Christodoulos, the head of the Church of Greece, has been hospitalized in Athens with symptoms of gastroenteritis.
Doctors at Aretaion Hospital said the religious leader was admitted Saturday with a high temperature and stomach problems, Ekathimerini reported Monday. They said the archbishop would remain under observation for a few days.
The hospitalization forced Christodoulos to cancel a trip to Egypt, Ekathimerini said.
Greek Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis phoned Christodoulos in the hospital and Religion and Education Minister Marietta Giannakou and Health Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos personally visited the leader in his hospital room, Ekathimerini said.
