MEDecision's Patient Clinical Summary To Be Implemented By Memphis Managed Care Corporation

Posted on: Wednesday, 13 June 2007, 09:05 CDT

MEDecision, Inc. (Nasdaq:MEDE), a provider of software, services and clinical content to health care payers, today announced a six month pilot program to provide the Patient Clinical Summary (PCS™) to Memphis Managed Care Corporation (MMCC). MMCC will deliver the Patient Clinical Summary to West Tennessee provider groups and independent practice associations participating in a state-supported pay-for-performance program.

A clinically validated, payer-based electronic health record, the Patient Clinical Summary compiles a member's current and historical medical data from doctors, labs, pharmacies and other sources that have been paid for by the member's health plan. MEDecision then augments the data with evidence-based medicine to create care plans and offer treatment opportunities. The Patient Clinical Summary is delivered to clinicians at the point of care through a secure Web portal.

MMCC, a participant in Tennessee's TennCare Medicaid program, currently serves more than 170,000 members across 21 counties. The Patient Clinical Summary will augment other MEDecision Collaborative Care Management solutions in use at MMCC, including iEXCHANGE, a component of MEDecision's Collaborative Data Exchange product suite, which is a Web-based technology that helps streamline health plan/physician transactions such as referrals and authorizations.

"The PCS will take our already well-established online communication with providers to the next level," said MMCC's Medical Director, Clarence Davis, M.D. "We currently receive about 50 percent of authorizations through the MEDecision iEXCHANGE product. PCS is the next logical step and will allow us to strengthen our provider relations by delivering clinical patient information to the point of care."

"We believe the PCS will be tremendously valuable to MMCC's population since, by their nature, Medicaid populations often have disjointed and incomplete medical records," said MEDecision President and Chief Operating Officer John H. Capobianco. "The PCS will provide more comprehensive patient information and give treating clinicians a clearer picture of each member's health, which benefits everyone."

MEDecision gauged the financial value of the Patient Clinical Summary in 2006 when it commissioned outcomes-based research firm HealthCore, Inc. to analyze the financial implications of providing it to emergency department physicians at an East Coast Level-I trauma center. The study found that each transmitted Patient Clinical Summary generated an average total savings of $545 on emergency department visit costs and first day hospitalization expenses for the subset of patients who were subsequently admitted. In addition, the report found that using the Patient Clinical Summary resulted in significant savings on laboratory testing, cardiac catheterization, and medical and surgical supplies.
