New Nutricate(TM) Receipt Helping Consumers Make Healthier Choices When Eating Out

June 20, 2007

SANTA BARBARA, Calif., June 20 /PRNewswire/ — Consumers looking to make healthier choices and keep track of their nutritional intake when eating out now have an easier way to do so, thanks to the new Nutricate(TM) Receipt system which is beginning to make its way into restaurants and food services organizations.

The patented system, the only solution that offers personalized nutritional information on a receipt, lets consumers see nutritional information such as calories, protein, fat and carbohydrates, and the percentage of recommended daily values based on the specific items they order. The receipt also offers consumers tips on how to eat healthier if they desire by providing additional information on the receipt such as “Did you know? If you hold the mayo on your sandwich, you’ll save 180 calories and 8 grams of fat?”

“Every day, Americans eat more of their meals in restaurants,” says Arlin Wasserman, executive director of the America On the Move Foundation. “Nutricate’s innovative program helps make sure that health has a place at the table, and on the receipt, so that people can make smart choices and small changes for good health when they place their order.”

With obesity and health issues on the rise, the food service industry has experienced increasing pressure from the Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and legislators to disclose nutritional information. Legislation aimed at forcing restaurants to disclose nutritional information is pending in at least 12 states.

Many food service providers are wary of offering nutritional information about their menu items because of logistical and economical challenges. For example, how can operators anticipate the exact way a customer will order their meal? Since 70 percent of consumers customize their order, according to the National Restaurant Association, this is an important issue. Furthermore, traditional nutrition information guides are for individual items and force customers to do the math to determine their meal totals, something few are willing to do.

Nutricate solves these issues by providing meal totals based on a customer’s specific order, making it more meaningful and convenient for consumers than any other disclosure method.

“Food service providers are under increasing pressure to disclose the nutritional value of their menu items to customers,” said Jay Ferro, Nutricate’s CEO and inventor. “The Nutricate Receipt system provides food service providers with a way to meet those demands, while simultaneously preserving their autonomy in offering that information.”

Extreme Pita, a quick serve restaurant known for its fresh, nutritious and large selection of pita sandwiches, recently installed the Nutricate(TM) Receipt system in mid-March 2007 in its San Diego Convoy Street store and has already had a tremendous response from customers.

“We’re thrilled with the overwhelmingly positive response we’ve received to the Nutricate(TM) Receipt. Our customers love getting nutritional information that’s tailored to them, and it’s helped us in getting the word out about our company,” said Brett Weiss, a San Diego/Orange County area developer for Extreme Pita. “There are lots of sandwich shops, but no one else is offering this level of nutritional information. People want to know what they’re eating, and Nutricate really helps set Extreme Pita apart from the crowd.”

“I love having a receipt that gives me information about exactly what I ordered,” said Brian Caisman, an Extreme Pita customer. “Having this information makes it easy for me to keep track of what I’m eating and how that fits into my daily diet. I wish more restaurants would offer this type of personalized information.”

The Nutricate Receipt is free to consumers, and is now available in stores such as Extreme Pita and Silvergreens.
