A JAB that protects against cervical cancer should be given to all girls aged 12 and 13, Department of Health advisers said today.

The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation recommended the use of vaccines against the sexually transmitted infection human papillomavirus, which can lead to the cancer.

The DoH said it had agreed “in principle” to accept the advice and that routine vaccination of girls could start in autumn next year.

It said the jab would protect against the viruses responsible for about 70 per cent of cases of cervical cancer..
