Return to Workplace Healthcare Focus of Address to National Business Group on Health Members

Posted on: Thursday, 21 June 2007, 15:00 CDT

On-site healthcare facilities for employees, once an approach reserved mostly for manufacturers, are today increasingly popular with employers of all types. As employers continue to look for ways to control healthcare costs and increase productivity, they are frequently turning to a modern version of the company doctor.

In the near future, workplace health centers will be shared by neighboring companies of varying size and nature, predicted the President of CHD Meridian Healthcare, Dr. Raymond J. Fabius.

In a National Business Group on Health online seminar titled "The New Delivery System: Back to the Future of Healthcare at the Worksite," Dr. Fabius said a number of forces are driving the migration to more robust on-site healthcare services. Dr. Fabius is also chief medical officer of CHD Meridian Healthcare, an I-trax company (AMEX: DMX), the leading workplace healthcare provider in the country with 220 locations nationwide.

"Employers are realizing that a healthy workforce is a competitive advantage. Placing trusted clinicians at the workplace who can provide expanded services is the most direct way to accomplish this," Dr. Fabius said. His comments in the seminar were based upon earlier work he published in an article titled, "The Migration Strategy: Building a Benchmark Medical Presence at the Workplace," in Health and Productivity Management.

Dr. Fabius told seminar participants that the return to workplace-based healthcare is being propelled by many factors, including:

-- A desire for greater risk management and regulatory compliance, especially at high risk workplaces or manufacturing operations; -- Case and medical management programs that improve workplace productivity -- coordinated care can reduce absenteeism and presenteeism whether an employee's condition is work related or not; -- The realization that employers can greatly reduce their direct medical costs and lost work time if they approach the workplace population from a holistic view; and -- The ability to integrate additional cost effective medical services including travel medicine, dental and vision services, pharmacy benefits and employee assistance programs.

"With an on-site health center, the improved access to primary care and pharmaceutical services results in earlier intervention and treatment compliance. This reduces the need for specialty care, emergency room use, hospitalization and absence from work," Dr. Fabius said.
