LIVERPOOL has the highest sick rate in England.

New Department of Health figures show almost one in seven residents -13.8% – are in poor health.

The key factors are smoking, alcohol, junk food, stress, heart disease and other issues related to poverty and low expectations.

The sick rate for the north west region is twice the national average, according to a “health of the nation” report launched today.

Knowsley residents are just behind the city with a sickness rate of 13.04% of the population.

But the health snapshot is not all bad news.

Cancer deaths in the region are down from 151 to 132 per 100,000 population while the average life expectancy has increased across the region by 1.8 years since 1997, taking it to 75.4 years for men and almost 80 for women.

Bowel cancer screenings have also been extended and deaths from circulatory disease have dipped by 46 per every 100,000 population.
