Researchers Make Skin From Hair Follicles
June 22, 2007
Researchers in Italy say they’ve found a way to use hair follicles to grow skin for grafting.
Pisa University’s Marco Romanelli said skin obtained from the hair contains an unusually tough version of both the dermis and epidermis, ANSA said Friday.
Romanelli said a biotech institute in San Marino is interested in developing the technique with stem cells to make it more widely applicable.
Skin grafts are used in the treatment of burns, varicose ulcers and after the surgical removal of skin cancers.
