Researchers Use LifeShirt(R) System From VivoMetrics(R) to Identify Breathing Patterns in Patients With Dyspnea

Posted on: Wednesday, 27 October 2004, 12:00 CDT

Dynamic hyperinflation, an important clinical characteristic of many diseases of the respiratory system including Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and asthma, is the likely cause of breathlessness and functional limitation in patients. The VivoMetrics' LifeShirt is the first and only medical device being used to identify mechanical patterns and changing variables in breathing patterns that may lead to the treatment of COPD and asthma.

Professor of Medicine Calverley and Dr. Sandy Jack from Aintree Chest Centre, University Hospital Aintree, Liverpool, UK have used the LifeShirt System to recognize patients experiencing dynamic hyperinflation during exercise which was not previously measurable. The ability to monitor specific breathing patterns -- also characterized as "finger prints" in this study -- using the LifeShirt will help to classify patients with COPD and idiopathic hyperventilation for analysis of their levels of dyspnea during exercise.

"The development of a relatively simple qualitative method of identifying patients who increase their lung volumes during exercise is a very useful step forward in the practical management of this clinical problem. Future studies will help us evaluate how best to use this new technique," said Professor Calverley.

"The LifeShirt System's ability to continuously collect data during patients' normal activities may allow researchers and physicians to identify dynamic hyperinflation in patients with various respiratory diseases. This could greatly expand our understanding of these diseases and their impact on those afflicted with them," said Dr. Jack.

The information gathered by the recent study could be used to prescribe and manage treatments to most effectively provide relief to patients suffering with diseases like COPD and asthma. "Continuous ambulatory monitoring of breathing mechanics may provide very important clinical data related to a wide range of issues of airway health," said Alex Derchak, PhD, Principal Scientist for VivoMetrics. "I can envision clinicians using the LifeShirt technology to continuously adjust patient treatment as needed."

About the LifeShirt System

The LifeShirt System is the first non-invasive, ambulatory monitoring system that continuously collects, records and analyzes a broad range of cardiopulmonary parameters. Users wear a lightweight, machine washable garment with embedded sensors that collect pulmonary, cardiac, posture and activity signals. Data collected by integrated peripheral devices measure blood pressure, blood oxygen saturation, EEG/EOG, periodic leg movement, temperature, end tidal CO2 and cough. An electronic diary captures subjective user input and all physiologic and subject data are correlated over time. The LifeShirt System has received FDA clearance and EMEA approval (CE Mark).

About VivoMetrics

VivoMetrics, founded in 1999, provides ambulatory monitoring products and services for the collection, analysis and reporting of subject-specific physiologic data. Pharmaceutical companies use VivoMetrics' technologies to improve the speed and economics of clinical research. The company's offerings also enable academic researchers to discover new clinical signatures of disease, and U.S. Government agencies to protect the lives of military and civilian first responders.
