Osteopathic Physician Identified in Paris Hilton Case is a Real Doctor

Posted on: Tuesday, 26 June 2007, 21:01 CDT

CHICAGO, June 26 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Recent media stories have conveyed inaccurate descriptions of osteopathic physicians (D.O.s). It has been reported that osteopathic physician, Charles Sophy, D.O., who is identified in the news as Paris Hilton's psychiatrist, is not an actual medical doctor. These reports imply that D.O.s are not "real" physicians when in fact they are fully licensed physicians who have practice rights equal to M.D.s.

D.O.s can prescribe medication, perform surgery and practice in any of the medical specialty areas, including psychiatry. Both D.O.s and M.D.s complete four years of medical education followed by participation in internship and residency programs. However, osteopathic physicians receive additional training in the musculoskeletal system.

Osteopathic medicine is mainstream medicine founded in America more than 130 years ago. Currently, there are 59,000 D.O.s in the U.S. They have treated Olympic athletes, U.S. soldiers and the president of the United States. For more information about D.O.s, visit http://www.osteopathic.org/.

The American Osteopathic Association (AOA) proudly represents its professional family of 59,000 osteopathic physicians (D.O.s); promotes public health; encourages scientific research; serves as the primary certifying body for D.O.s; is the accrediting agency for osteopathic medical colleges; and has federal authority to accredit hospitals and other health care facilities. More information on D.O.s/osteopathic medicine can be found at http://www.osteopathic.org/.

This is the AOA's official statement on this issue.
