The American Lung Association announced today that Bernadette A. Toomey has been named President and Chief Executive Officer of the American Lung Association, effective July 1, 2007. Toomey succeeds John L. Kirkwood, who is retiring after 37 years of service, the last six as President and CEO of the Association.
"We are delighted to welcome Bernadette as our President and CEO," said Bruce A. Herring, American Lung Association Chair of the Board. "Her passion for our mission, her knowledge of health issues related to air pollution and smoking and her extraordinary management and marketing talents make her the right executive to lead our organization," he added.
Toomey formerly served as Executive Vice-President for Strategic Partnerships and Development at the American Legacy Foundation, an organization that was established to discourage young people from smoking and help smoking adults quit. Legacy was created as a result of the 1999 agreement between attorney generals in 46 states and five U.S. territories and the tobacco industry. She also served in the Clinton administration as a consultant to the Department of Education.
"Air pollution and smoking and conquering lung diseases such as asthma and COPD are among the most important health issues Americans face today," Toomey said, adding, "I am excited and pleased to lead the American Lung Association team nationally. The Lung Association has been in the forefront of addressing these significant issues for the good of the American public for more than a century."
In her extensive professional career in the not-for-profit, for profit, government and corporate sectors, Toomey pioneered a number of ground-breaking, health-related programs including the Look Good, Feel Better program to help bolster the health and spirits of women dealing with radiation and chemotherapy during breast cancer treatment. She also initiated the Great Start program to educate pregnant women on the dangers of smoking and the award-winning Circle of Friends program to support women in their efforts to stop smoking.
"It makes perfect sense why the plateau of Toomey's accomplishments complements the mission of the American Lung Association; she understands the challenge and is ready to join the organization in continuing to travel the pathway to preventing Lung Disease and Promoting Lung Health," added Herring.
A native of Brooklyn, New York, Toomey received a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from Marymount Manhattan College and a Masters in Adult Education from American University.
