WARRENDALE, Pa., Oct. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Hundreds of high school students from throughout western Pennsylvania will participate in Health Quest, the area's only health care career and college fair, on Friday, October 29, 2004 at Community College of Allegheny County's Boyce Campus.
"This program, which Hospital Council has sponsored for many years, is one way we work with our members to help address the long term workforce needs of our region's hospitals and other health care facilities," said Sue Flaherty, Career Development Specialist for the Center for Health Careers.
Health Quest is a special health care career and college fair sponsored by Hospital Council of Western Pennsylvania's Center for Health Careers. "There are many types of health career and educational opportunities for high school students to explore at Health Quest," said Flaherty. "Today, there are so many different careers students can explore -- everything from massage therapy to anesthesia technology and occupational therapy and, with the shortages being felt in the health care workforce, it is an in demand career option."
Students from 20 high schools and their school representatives will participate in workshops hosted by a variety of health care professionals as well as have the opportunity to speak personally in interactive areas with health professionals to learn first-hand about their job responsibilities and educational requirements.
In addition, high school students will be able to speak directly with representatives from 32 college, university and hospital-based training program representatives to assist students in determining admission requirements for each of their programs.
Health care professions represented at Health Quest include: anesthesia technology, athletic training, biomedical equipment technician, dietetics, health information management, imaging, medical technology, nursing, occupational therapy, pharmacy, physical therapy, respiratory therapy, sonography, and surgical technology.
Hospital Council's Center for Health Careers holds three regional Health Quest events attracting more than 1,200 students annually. This year, Health Quest was held at Gannon University in Erie on October 8 and at Mt. Aloysius College in Cresson on October 15.
Hospital Council's Center for Health Careers is a clearinghouse providing accurate, timely, educational information about health care careers in response to the community's need for an appropriately educated health care work force.
Hospital Council of Western Pennsylvania is a regional association providing data, information, education and advocacy to the region's hospitals, nursing homes and other healthcare facilities.
