Each year, the Center for Business Practices (CBP), the research and publications arm of project management consultancy PM Solutions, distinguishes a project management office (PMO) for its success and impact within an organization's overall business strategy. This year, at the 2007 CBP Summit in Scottsdale (Hyatt Regency Scottsdale, June 28-29,) the CBP recognized Louisville, Kentucky-based Norton Healthcare as the 2007 PMO of the Year winner for their Enterprise Program Management Office (EPMO).
Norton Healthcare's EPMO team supports various projects, programs, and portfolios throughout its organization, including four hospitals, medical centers, and the corporate office. Following a defined methodology, Norton Healthcare's office has implemented projects of all scopes, from human resources to construction. Specifically, Norton Healthcare's EPMO demonstrated the following award-winning qualities:
Project and portfolio focus
Formalized project management career ladder
Guidelines for single project management
Methods for prioritization of the projects within the portfolio
"Norton Healthcare's EPMO team provides tangible benefits that resonate throughout, and are lauded by, its entire organization," said Jim Pennypacker, director of the Center for Business Practices. "The organization's practical approach to project and portfolio management generates impressively consistent results enterprise-wide."
"Thanks to our EPMO, we haven't had to sell the organization on project management; we've been able to demonstrate its value through practical use with the backing of the CIO," said Janet Yackey, Director or Enterprise Program Management for Norton Healthcare. "Successful project management is a high priority at Norton Healthcare, and we're proud to have our efforts recognized publicly by the CBP."
Nominations for PMO of the Year were judged on a number of criteria, including:
