NEWCASTLE University has been awarded pounds 181,000 for crucial research into Parkinson’s disease.

The cash, awarded by the Parkinson’s Disease Society, will allow scientists to study how sufferers develop it.

Scientists believe that changes to the way cells receive energy lead to someone developing Parkinson’s, but not enough is known about the process.

Dr Kieran Breen of the Parkinson’s Disease Society said: “The exact causes of Parkinson’s are not yet known so research into factors affecting how it develops will enhance our understanding of how to treat or prevent it.”
