Michigan Health & Hospital Association Elects 2007 Officers and Board Members, Bestows Awards

LANSING, Mich., June 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Members of the Michigan Health & Hospital Association (MHA) elected new officers and board members during the association's Annual Membership Meeting yesterday. Officers of the 2007 MHA Board of Trustees include Richard Breon, chairman; Nancy M. Schlichting, chair-elect; and Frank J. Sardone, treasurer. The board directs the Lansing- based association's statewide representation of hospitals and health care providers.

Breon, chief executive officer of Spectrum Health, Grand Rapids, will serve as chairman during the association's 2007-2008 program year beginning July 1. The terms of service of Schlichting, president and CEO, Henry Ford Health System, Detroit, and Sardone, president/CEO, Bronson Healthcare Group, Inc., Kalamazoo, will also span the 2007-2008 program year. Gerald D. Fitzgerald, vice chairman, Oakwood Healthcare, Inc., Dearborn, will serve as immediate past chairman.

Newly elected board members include Barbara Bergin, president of the Michigan Association of Healthcare Advocates, Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital, Commerce Township; K. Douglas Deck, president & CEO, Munson Healthcare, Traverse City; William Jackson, president, Charlevoix Area Hospital; Gregory Lane, chief administrative officer, McLaren Health Care, Flint; Lynn Orfgen, president & CEO, Crittenton Hospital Medical Center, Rochester; and Richard Reynolds, president, MidMichigan Medical Center, Midland.

Current MHA board members who were re-appointed to new terms of service are Michael Duggan, president & CEO, Detroit Medical Center; Ned Hughes Jr., president, Gerber Memorial Health Services, Fremont; Elliot Joseph, president/CEO, St. John Health, Warren; Spencer Maidlow, president & CEO, Covenant Medical Center, Inc., Saginaw; and Kenneth Matzick, president & CEO, Beaumont Hospitals, Royal Oak.

Current MHA board members who will continue their terms of service are Brian Connolly, president & CEO, Oakwood Healthcare, Inc., Dearborn; Kathleen Griffiths, president/CEO, Chelsea Community Hospital; Wayne Hellerstedt, administrator/CEO, Helen Newberry Joy Hospital, Newberry; Lester Heyboer Jr., president & CEO, HealthSource Saginaw, Inc.; Patrick Lamberti, president & CEO, POH Medical Center, Pontiac; Philip McCorkle, president & CEO, Saint Mary's Health Care, Grand Rapids; John Schon, administrator/CEO, Dickinson County Healthcare System, Iron Mountain; Douglas Strong, director/CEO, University of Michigan Hospitals & Health Centers, Ann Arbor; Dennis Swan, president/CEO, Sparrow Hospital & Health System, Lansing; and Joseph Wasserman, president & CEO, Lakeland Regional Health System, St. Joseph. In addition, Spencer Johnson continues to serve his term of office as president of the association.

The MHA also presented several awards during the meeting. The MHA Meritorious Service Award, the association's highest honor, was presented to Gerald D. Fitzgerald, vice chairman, Oakwood Healthcare, Inc., and Marlene Hulteen, former corporate vice president of the MHA. Receiving the MHA Special Recognition Award were Paul Reinhart, director, Medical Services Administration, Michigan Department of Community Health, and Carl E. Ver Beek, attorney-of-counsel, Varnum Riddering Schmidt & Howlett, Grand Rapids.

The MHA Ludwig Community Benefit Award is presented annually to health care organizations that demonstrate community benefit by collaborating with local organizations to improve the health and well-being of their communities through health care, economic or social initiatives. As resources to sustain and improve valuable community health improvement programs are often scarce, a $2,500 cash award is also presented from the MHA Health Foundation. The 2007 award was bestowed upon the North Central Council of the MHA, Petoskey, and its member hospitals for the Let's Get Moving Northern Michigan program, and upon Memorial Healthcare, Owosso, for its Memorial FIT Kids program.

The MHA is a state association, based in Lansing, that represents and supports Michigan hospitals, health systems and health care providers through education, advocacy and communication.
