Hispanic Helpline Offers Information for Consumers and Business Owners on FDA Public Health Action on Contaminated Food and Health Products From China

WASHINGTON, June 29 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The National Alliance for Hispanic Health is working with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), part of the Department of Health and Human Services, to provide information to Hispanic consumers about contaminated food and health products from China.
On Thursday the FDA announced a broader import control of all farm-raised catfish, basa, shrimp, dace (related to carp), and eel from China. FDA announced today that it will start to detain these products at the border until the shipments are proven to be free of residues from drugs that are not approved in the United States for use in farm-raised aquatic animals. FDA said today that there have been no reports of illnesses to date and affected farm- raised seafood already in the country is not being recalled.
"We are working closely with the FDA to help get out information to Hispanic consumers and business owners about actions being taken to protect the public health," said Dr. Jane L. Delgado, President and CEO of the National Alliance for Hispanic Health. "Our health promotion advisors are prepared to answer consumer questions and provide information."
This follows FDA announcements and action on contaminated toothpaste and animal feed found -- and subsequently recalled -- in the U.S. that were produced in China. Additionally, previous concerns about the level of mercury in some fish sold in the U.S. led to a national advisory from FDA.
