Even Though the OTC Pharmaceuticals Market Is Already One of the Fastest Growing In China, the Forecast for This Market Remains Very Bullish

China has a large and fast-growing pharmaceuticals industry. The estimated value of the domestic industry in China, at the end of 2005, will be in the region of RMB288.74bn (US$34.89bn), and will have grown by over 140% since 1998.

The largest sector in the industry in 2005 is for prepared chemical (western) medicines, which is expected to reach a value of RMB99.96bn (US$12.08bn) by the end of 2005, having grown by about 144% since 1998, and representing 34.62% of China's total domestic pharmaceuticals industry.

There is also the traditional Chinese medicine market to contend with a much more potent force than the herbal or homeopathic drugs markets in the West.

Other key issues affecting the development of the market at present include the need for more improvements to product quality and packaging design; better distribution channels, the development of viable and expansive retail chemist chains and improved regulation on product pricing.

All of the key issues are being tackled by the Chinese government and the domestic industry, and they are ambitious about what they can achieve. Even though the OTC pharmaceuticals market is already one of the fastest growing in China, the forecast for this market remains very bullish.

Indeed, forecasts on growth in this market range from a rise of 50% over the next five years, to the market increasing in size by almost 5 times present value! Such high growth rates illustrate how strong the perceived potential in this market is.

Increasing public awareness about health care and the importance of self-medication as well as the rapid rise in urban living standards and growing disposable income levels are combining to allow for the increased purchase of OTC pharmaceuticals and consequently propelling growth in the market.

There is also the changing nature of China's healthcare framework. Currently, the total number of non-State Owned Enterprise (SOE) workers who aren't covered by the state health insurance scheme has now overtaken that of covered SOE employees. This non-covered group naturally has a greater interest and need in self medication.

Additionally, Large increases in rural migrant populations in urban areas (approximately 3 and 3.5 million migrant workers in Beijing and Shanghai respectively) have also contributed to the rise in OTC consumption, as these migrant workers also fall outside the public health care insurance system and have to pay for hospital treatment and medication themselves.

It seems inevitable that the ongoing and proposed future reforms to China's healthcare insurance system will invariably divert more of the population to self-medication and OTC pharmaceutical consumption.
