CHICAGO, Nov. 2 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The lap pool at Good Samaritan Health and Wellness Center, Downers Grove, was ranked first among 34 similar pools in the Fitness/Health Centers category by the DuPage County Health Department for the pool season ending September 2004.
Inspections are made at least monthly, on varying days and times. Inspectors evaluate water quality, mechanical equipment, pool safety features, pool decks, lockers rooms and showers.
"We are very proud that our lap pool was ranked number 1 out of 34 pools," says Randy Roe, Wellness Center Operations Supervisor. "The inspectors are very thorough, not only looking at water quality, but also at safety features such as guard rails, access to first aid equipment, the security of grab bars, entry stairs, water safety equipment, and emergency telephone access."
According to the report issued by the DuPage County Health Department dated October 2004, points are deducted for violations, if any, in the inspection categories. Of the 34 pools in the Fitness/ Health Center category, the average monthly point deduction was 15.3 points. The average point value deduction per inspection ranged from 2.08 points to 33.8 points. The Good Samaritan Health and Wellness Center, with the lowest point value lost, was the highest ranked pool in this, the Fitness/Health Center, category.
"While being ranked first is something to celebrate, it really doesn't tell the whole story," according to Laura Neiberg, Good Samaritan Health and Wellness Center Director. "The real message is that the water quality, pool area, and locker rooms at the Wellness Center provide a safe, clean setting to take a class, workout, swim laps, or water walk. This environment of safety and quality demonstrates Good Samaritan's commitment to the community and is an extension of the healthcare services available throughout the Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital campus."
The two pool operators at the Good Samaritan Health and Wellness Center are both nationally certified by the National Swimming Pool Foundation. "We feel strongly that member safety is the primary component of medically-based fitness. That means that having nationally certified operators and clean, safe pools is essential," says Randy Roe. "The Wellness Center represents the preventative side of health care, combining a state-of-the-art fitness facility with the expertise and experience of Good Samaritan Hospital."
A copy of the report is available at the Good Samaritan Health and Wellness Center through the Facilities Department and is posted in the pool office, or by contacting the DuPage County Health Department.
