A suicide bomber killed at least eight Pakistani soldiers in an attack on a military convoy, the army said Saturday.

Fifteen other soldiers were wounded in North Waziristan, near the village of Daznary, Maj-Gen Waheed Arshad told the BBC.

The suicide bomber rammed the convoy with a vehicle packed with explosives, BBC News reported. The attack occurred near the border with Afghanistan, where Pakistani troops, tribal groups and foreign militants often clash.

Thousands of Pakistani soldiers were moved to the region after the storming of the Red Mosque in Islamabad this past week.

Pakistani authorities fear militants may retaliate for the government’s assault on the mosque. As many as 75 people died inside the mosque and 10 soldiers were killed by gunfire from militants inside the mosque.
