AN initial report into foot and mouth in Surrey said there was a “strong probability” it began at the Pirbright research site, home to the state-run Institute for Animal Health. Hundreds of cattle have been culled to keep the outbreak contained.

WE are told the source of the foot and mouth outbreak is one of two laboratories which carry out research or make foot and mouth vaccine.

If such a vaccine is available why is it not in use to prevent the wholesale slaughter of animals with the disease?

This would also prevent farmers from losing their livelihoods and alleviate the mental anguish of the affected farmers who clearly care for their animals like family members.
