All Safe After Aircraft Fire in Japan

A China Airlines Boeing 737′s left engine burst into flames soon after landing Monday in Okinawa, Japan, but all 157 passengers and crew escaped.

The Taiwan-based plane left Taipei at 9:23 a.m. and landed at Naha airport. Minutes after taxiing to a halt, there was some sort of explosion and the fire erupted, the Kyodo news agency reported.

The National Police Agency said one flight crew member and a ground crew member were injured and two passengers were taken to a hospital reportedly feeling ill, officials said.

Police said there was no indication of terrorist activity in the fire, which took 2 minutes to extinguish.

China Airlines’ last major accident was when a passenger jet broke into pieces in 2002 on its way from Taipei to Hong Kong, killing all 225 people aboard, the report said.
