PAKISTAN’S former prime minister Nawaz Sharif yesterday tried to return home and fight for democracy.

But within hours, he was put on a plane to Saudi Arabia.

Amid chaotic scenes, he was taken into custody and charged with corruption within minutes of his plane from London touching down in Islamabad.

Sharif, 57, right, who has been in exile for seven years, had hoped to stand in elections this month against the country’s military ruler president Pervez Musharraf.

Sharif arrived in Pakistan just weeks after the country’s Supreme Court ruled in favour of his right to return and judges said that authorities should not obstruct him.
