A Southern California peace activist has been released from an Iranian prison four months after being arrested, a report said Tuesday.

Ali Shakeri, 59, from Orange County, Calif., was released from Evin Prison in Tehran and is with family members in Iran, his son, Kaveh Shakeri, told The Los Angeles Times.

Shakeri called Monday to report he was safe and resting, his son said.

Shakeri is a mortgage broker and founding member of the Center for Citizen Peacebuilding at the University of California, Irvine. He was one was one of four people with dual citizenship detained in Iran in recent months and the last to be released.

Kaveh Shakeri said he delivered a letter of appeal to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad at a dinner Sunday in New York, but he does not know if that had any bearing on his father’s release.
