Inter-Korean Talks Warm Slightly

Posted on: Wednesday, 3 October 2007, 09:00 CDT

The atmosphere between North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il and South Korean President Roh Moo Hyun warmed slightly Wednesday in Pyongyang.

While Kim gave Roh a stony welcome Tuesday, a New York Times correspondent said he opened Wednesday's talks by smiling and asking if Roh had slept well.

Roh reportedly laid out plans to help North Korea's battered economy in exchange for military reductions and the abandonment of the country's nuclear program, the report said.

The men met in private for two hours and were scheduled for another afternoon session.

The Times said television coverage of the leaders arriving for talks startled viewers in South Korea as Kim showed up with only his intelligence chief at his side instead of his usual entourage.

While the summit is scheduled to end Thursday morning, CNN reported Kim had offered to extend it one more day but was turned down by Roh. There were no other details as to the offer or its refusal.
