EU’s Solana Meets Iranian Nuclear Envoy
The European Union’s foreign policy chief met with Iran’s head nuclear envoy ahead of reporting to the United Nations regarding the Iranian nuclear issue.
EU chief Javier Solana and Iran’s Saeed Jalili met in London before reporting to the United Nations in talks that could affect further sanctions against Iran, the BBC said Friday.
Solana is seeking confidence-building measures from the Iranians regarding their obligations to the U.N. Security Council to suspend uranium enrichment.
The United Nations requested both the International Atomic Energy Agency and Solana report on Iran’s nuclear program, which the Iranians insist is for peaceful purposes.
Some officials viewed the latest IAEA report with mixed views as the Jalili offered no suggestions the Iranian’s would suspend enrichment activity, the BBC said.
The United States and European Union are pushing for harsher sanctions against the Iranians for its nuclear program but China and Russia, veto-wielding permanent members of the U.N. Security Council, have balked on the issue.
