Massive Oil Spill Near South Korea

Posted on: Friday, 7 December 2007, 12:00 CST

The South Korean Coast Guard Friday struggled to contain the largest ever oil spill in Korea following a collision between a barge and an oil tanker.

More than 10,000 tons of oil spilled into the waters off the coast of South Korea when a 146,000-ton Hong Kong-registered tanker smashed into a barge, the Korea Times reported.

The Korean Coast Guard said it was struggling to contain the spill in the face of high waves and gale force winds.

Maritime officials said it would take two or three days to contain the oil spill and warned of the danger of nausea and headaches caused by fumes wafting to coastal communities.

Officials did not expect any significant environmental impact from the spill.
