Musharraf Lifts State of Emergency Ahead of Poll
December 16, 2007
:: PAKISTAN
Pakistan’s President, Pervez Musharraf, yesterday lifted the nation’s six-week state of emergency, saying he imposed it to save Pakistan from “conspirators”, and restored the constitution. The move was welcomed by many ahead of the elections on 8 January, but political opponents were more wary. Under emergency rule President Musharraf arrested hundreds of people, replaced Supreme Court judges and imposed tight restrictions on the press. Yesterday he claimed he had taken the measures as a last resort. NL
