Colombian Volcano Erupts

January 18, 2008

The Galeras volcano erupted in southwestern Colombia, prompting thousands of residents to evacuate the area, El Tiempo reported online Friday.

The region around the volcano is inhabited by some 8,000 people. However, there were no reports of injuries or significant damage following Thursday’s eruption.

Officials expressed concern that shifting winds could spread the ash and cause damage to homes and other buildings.

A 1993 eruption of Galeras left nine people dead.
