Nine Die in Explosions
March 17, 2008
A SERIES of explosions at an army depot near the Albanian capital Tirana have killed at least nine people and injured more than 240.
Another 10 workers are still missing.
Prime minister Sali Berisha said the explosions in Gerdec, a village about six miles north of Ti rana, were accidentally triggered during work to destroy ammunition stockpiled during Albania’s communist past.
The blasts started at about 10am on Saturday and continued for 14 hours.
The first explosion was heard as far away as Skopje, the Macedonian capital, 120 miles from Gerdec.
