Report Alleges U.S. ‘Renditions’ to Jordan

U.S.-based human rights activists alleged the CIA has turned over at least 14 suspected terrorists to authorities in Jordan for interrogation since 2001.

Human Rights Watch contended that the so-called renditions lasted until at least 2004 and were in violation of international law.

The Bush administration claims that it has not transferred people to foreign custody for abusive interrogation, said Joanne Mariner, terrorism and counter-terrorism director at Human Rights Watch. But we have documented more than a dozen cases in which prisoners were sent to Jordan for torture.

Human Rights Watch said in a written statement that the Jordanian General Intelligence Agency and the CIA denied the renditions; however, the group said the denials were outweighed by what it called credible evidence to the contrary. It also called on Jordan to accept an international investigation into the alleged incidents.
