A new spate of attacks on immigrants in Johannesburg, South Africa, have left at least 12 people dead, police say.
Police said the renewed violence by armed youths in the city killed five people overnight, including two individuals who were burned to death, the BBC reported Sunday.
The immigrant attacks started last week in the township of Alexandria where African immigrants were attacked by armed assailants chanting kick the foreigners out, police say.
Since last Friday, the violent attacks also left more than 50 people injured with gunshot or stab wounds.
Immigrants in downtown Johannesburg had begun seeking police protection to avoid becoming another victim of the growing violence against non-South Africans.
The British network said African National Congress head Jacob Zuma has condemned the attacks, calling them a potential hazard to the international community's view of South Africa.
We cannot allow South Africa to be famous for xenophobia, the head of the governing political party said.
