Morgan Tsvangirai returned to Zimbabwe Saturday to prepare for his run-off election against incumbent Robert Mugabe, despite fears for his safety.
Tsavngirai arrived in Harare by air and his motorcade was guarded by police as it left the airport, the BBC reported. He returned to the country after spending much of the past two months abroad while his supporters were subjected to a police crackdown that resulted in the deaths of at least 40 and hundreds were injured.
Tsvangirai, leader of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change party, left the country shortly after the March 29 presidential election against longtime Zimbabwe president Mugabe, which was close enough to force a run-off election scheduled for June 27.
Tsvangirai returned despite being at risk for an assassination attempt, his supporters said. Tsvangirai spokesman George Sibotshiwe told CNN the party's entire leadership are at risk from this brutal regime.
However, a member of Mugabe's cabinet denied Tsvangirai was in any danger. Chen Chimutengwende, Zimbabwe's minister of public and interactive affairs, told the network, There is no plot against him and there has never been any plot against him and he knows that.
