Romanian Government to Rule on Abortion

The Romanian government has become involved in a controversy over an 11-year-old rape victim should be allowed to have an abortion in Britain.
Florina Vranceanu is 20 weeks pregnant, past the legal limit to end a pregnancy in Romania. Her parents want to take her to Britain, where abortions can be carried out as late as 24 weeks.
Her parents say she girl was sexually assaulted by her 19-year-old uncle, who has disappeared. Local officials have given contradictory decisions, and the Romanian Orthodox Church, child protection services and other groups have become involved.
While the child protection authority says the girl, who is said to be traumatized by the rape, should not be forced to bear a child, a doctor's group says the government should consider the rights of the fetus she is carrying.
Although at least one Orthodox leader has tried to convince the parents not to go ahead with an abortion, the church has called their situation exceptional and said that only the family can decide on the best course.
