Protests Greet Syrian President’s Visit to Paris
July 13, 2008
:: FRANCE
France’s President Nicolas Sarkozy, whose country holds the EU presidency, met his Syrian counterpart, Bashar al-Assad, ahead of an EU-Mediterranean summit in Paris today. Western nations have largely shunned Syria over accusations of destabilising Lebanon and Iraq, but Mr Assad was invited after a recent deal that averted civil war in Lebanon. His visit has been criticised by human rights activists.
