Bertha Weakens to Tropical Storm

A near-stationary Hurricane Bertha weakened to tropical storm status Sunday, 220 miles southeast of Bermuda, U.S. forecasters in Miami reported.
The storm had sustained winds of 70 mph with gusts up to 90 mph, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.
The system stalled its forward movement Saturday, leading Miami forecaster Lixion Avilla to say in his advisory: After a week or so ... I am running out of things to say about Bertha.
Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 140 miles, but some weakening was forecast through Monday, the report said.
The Bermuda weather office posted a tropical storm warning Saturday saying as much as 4 inches of rain could fall in the next couple of days.
The island's Royal Gazette newspaper said that could be a blessing, as there has been only about 20 percent of the normal rainfall for this time of year. The majority of Bermuda's fresh water comes from rain, which is stored beneath buildings in cisterns.
Heavy surf began pounding the island Friday, which was expected to continue at least for two more days, the report said.
