Lawyer to Lodge Appeal Over Karadzic’s Extradition to Serbian Court

Text of report in English by Serbian pro-western Belgrade-based Radio B92 website, on 25 July

Belgrade: The deadline for filing an appeal over the conditions for Radovan Karadzic's extradition expires today.

Karadzic lawyer, Svetozar Vujacic, announced earlier that he would be sending the appeal by mail today at 19.55 CET [1755 gmt], right before the deadline.

He said that he was taking his time with filing the appeal to allow more time for Karadzic's family to come to Belgrade to visit him before he is extradited to the Hague Tribunal.

Karadzic's immediate family, who live in the Republic of Srpska, had their travel documents confiscated because of suspicions that they were involved in the Hague fugitives' support network.

A decision to return them their passports and allow them to visit Karadzic in Belgrade is due to be made by Bosnia-Herzegovina High Representative Miroslav Lajcak.

According to procedure, the War Crimes Chamber has three days in which to respond to the appeal.

An appeal cannot be filed against the war crimes chamber's ruling afterwards, and the final decision for extradition is taken by the Justice Ministry.
