As a city that ranks first in fat and crime, Memphis now has a No. 1 to be proud of.

The Memphis Zoo has been named the top zoo in the country by TripAdvisor, a Web site (Trip Advisor.com) that features travel- related reviews from regular citizens.

“We had a very wonderful surprise when we saw that,” said Chuck Brady, zoo CEO.

The ranking is based on a popularity index that ranks attractions, said Brooke Ferencsik, Trip Advisor spokeswoman.

There are 30 reviews of the Memphis Zoo on the site. The Arizona- Sonora Desert Museum (No. 2) had 37 reviews and the St. Louis Zoo (No. 3) had 34.

People “just raved” about the Memphis Zoo, Ferencsik said. “Unanimously, people say it’s a great zoo.”

The zoo received a 90 percent overall satisfaction score, which is nearly 25 percent higher than the national average, zoo officials said.

The goal has been to build a world-class zoo in Memphis, Brady said.

“We’ve been saying that, not for the last few years but for the last 20 years, and I think what this confirms is that we’re well on our way,” he said.
