N. Korea Halts Work on Disabling Reactors

Posted on: Tuesday, 26 August 2008, 12:00 CDT

North Korea threatened Tuesday to restore its Yongbyon nuclear reactor if the U.S. government fails to remove it from a list of terrorist sponsors.

The North Korean Foreign Ministry said it earlier this month suspended the disabling of its nuclear facilities and now has rejected a U.S.-backed plan to verify the status of its atomic activities, Yonhap, the South Korean news agency, reported.

North Korea now will consider restoring "nuclear facilities in Yongbyon to their original state as strongly requested by its relevant institutions," a Foreign Ministry spokesman warned, apparently referring to North Korea's hard-line military authorities.

North Korea had been disabling its reactors under a deal signed last year promising political and economic awards, including removal from the sponsors of terrorists' list.

The Bush administration said last week it would keep North Korea on the list until that country establishes an internationally recognizable way to verify its nuclear activities, including allowing inspections without warning, Yonhap reported.
