Vietnam Prioritizes Safety in Building Nuclear Power Plants

Ninh Thuan (VNA) -Vietnam sees the need to build nuclear power plants to ensure energy security and places safety first in implementing the projects, said an official in charge for a project to build the country's first nuclear power plant in central Ninh Thuan province on Sept. 5.
Phan Minh Tuan, head of the project's investment board, made the remark at a meeting with representatives of over 400 local families in Ninh Phuoc and Ninh Hai districts, where the first nuclear power plant will be located.
According to him, the Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) and relevant agencies will select the world's advanced technologies for the project to ensure safety in its construction and operation.
The meeting, held alongside with a three-day exhibition-cum- seminar on nuclear power technologies of Japan, a leading country in nuclear power development, aimed to help Ninh Thuan residents understand more about nuclear power towards public consensus on construction of the country's first nuclear power plant.
The event is jointly organized by Ninh Thuan provincial People's Committee, the Vietnam Nuclear Energy Institute, the Electricity of Vietnam, the Japan External Trade Promotion Organization and the Japan Forum for Nuclear Energy Industry.
At the meeting, Vietnamese officials and Japanese experts introduced the latest nuclear power technologies, and the preeminence of nuclear power plants in ensuring energy security.
They also answered the locals' questions related to compensation, resettlement and safety for their lives.
The 4,000 MW nuclear power plant is expected to be commissioned in 2020.
