Power-Sharing Deal Reached in Zimbabwe

Posted on: Thursday, 11 September 2008, 18:00 CDT

Zimbabwean leaders have negotiated a power-sharing agreement that could end the country's isolation, South African President Thabo Mbeki said Thursday.

Mbeki said that a signing schedule is set for Monday in Harare, SW Radio reported. He would not release any details.

Zimbabwe has been in an economic crisis for several years, with hyperinflation that has made its currency worthless. Morgan Tsvangirai, leader of the Movement for Democratic Change, outpolled President Robert Mugabe in national elections but pulled out of a runoff, saying that violence by the president's allies made a fair vote impossible.

The MDC won a small parliamentary majority. Tsvangirai had said he would only accept an agreement that stripped the 84-year-old Mugabe of most of his power.

MDC members of Parliament mocked Mugabe when he convened parliament in August.
