September 28, 2008
:: SYRIA NEWS IN BRIEF
A car bomb with 440lb of explosives killed at least 17 people in the Syrian capital, Damascus. The attack, close to a major security base on a road leading to the international airport, was one of the biggest in Syria since the early 1980s. In February, Imad Moughniyah, the military commander of the Lebanese Islamist group Hizbollah, was assassinated in a car bombing in Damascus, which was blamed on Israeli agents, though Jerusalem denied involvement.
