Tropical Storm Marco Nears Mexican Coast

Posted on: Tuesday, 7 October 2008, 09:00 CDT

Tropical Storm Marco was headed for landfall on Mexico's east coast early Tuesday with 65 mph winds, U.S. forecasters in Miami said.

At 5 a.m., the storm was about 105 miles southeast of Tuxpan, Mexico, moving toward the west-northwest near 8 mph, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.

A tropical storm warning and a hurricane watch were declared Cabo Rojo south to Veracruz.

Marco is the most compact storm of the year's Atlantic season, as its tropical storm-force winds extend 10 miles, the report said. However, there was a possibility of intensification to hurricane status, forecasters said.

Marco is expected to drop as much as 6 inches of rain across the southern and central Mexican states of northern Veracruz, northern Puebla, Hidalgo and San Luis Potosi.
