World in brief

MALE The first multi-party presidential election in the Maldives will go to a second round of voting within 10 days after the incumbent, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, failed to win outright. Mr Gayoom, above, secured 41 per cent of the votes, while Mohamed Nasheed, the opposition leader, came second with 25 per cent. Four other candidates were knocked out. President Gayoom, Asia's longest- serving leader, has held power in the Indian Ocean archipelago for 30 years.
